Background

Utopos is a digital archive of the past. The long-term goal is to build a visual identity that encapsulates the Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and Nuclear Age design movements.

Challenge

The key challenge in the process was creating a visual language that combined three very distinct styles in American design history.

Strategy

The name Utopos has two meanings: the good place and the place that cannot be. Rather than focusing on complete historical accuracy, I tried to blend all of the movements together. The ultimate goal was to create a sense of nostalgia for a time I have never experienced, while acknowledging that such a past may never have existed.

I started with the Dark Deco style, borrowed from Batman the Animated Series and Mad Men promo material. It focuses on the transition between the sharp, angular geometry of the Art Deco movement and the bullet shaped forms of the Streamlining era.
